|Ripe Art Gallery presents "What Is A Portrait", Juried and Curated by Ruben Natal-San Miguel, photographer, writer, photography specialist/critic and curator.. Beginning in September2014, RIPE and San Miguel put out an Open Call for entries of contemporary photography based works. The curator was looking to see exceptional photography with a unique perspective and cohesive look based on a new look at portraiture. He challenged entrants to redefine what a portrait is. Our juror, who has his finger on the pulse of contemporary photography, pored over hundreds of entries to select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Winners, 2 Honorable Mentions, and a group of winners for individual catagories.|
Winners were exhibited with acclaimed photographers, such as Amy Elkins, Oliver Wasow, Nan Goldin, Aline Smithson, Ryan McGinley, Jack Pierson, Martin Parr, Phil Toledano, Patrick McMullin, Hank Willis Thomas. Nayland Blake, and Marina Abrobovic.

ABOUT OUR JUROR:
Ruben Natal–San Miguel is an American photographer, writer, photography specialist/critic and curator. He was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico and lives and works in New York City.
His work has been shown nationally and internationally at Asya Geisberg Gallery, New York; Finch & Ada, New York; Kris Graves Projects, Hous Projects, New York and Los Angeles, University of Washington, Seattle; Art in FLUX Harlem, Picture Black Friday 2009 and 2011, A Decade of Photographs 2000-2011, The New York Public Library 2010 -2014. Karyn Mannix Contemporary, SCOPE NYC, Agua Art Fair During Miami Art Basel, PULSE NYC,Art Chicago,Zona MAco, Mexico City, Photo LA and Phillips Auction House. His photography and curated shows has been published in several publications among New York Magazine, The Huffington Post, L Magazine, ARTnet, American Suburb X, The Bushwick Daily, Time OUT, The Atlantic, Aperture, Daily News, Wink Magazine Urban Italy Magazine, French Photo and The New Yorker. He won the Photo District News Magazine Portrait competition.
Ruben Natal-San Miguel holds a Bachelor and Master Degree in Architecture from Boston Architectural College and Finance and Business Administration from Boston University. He works and lives in Manhattan where after 20 years he continues to live “La Vida Loca.”
